Frequent questions

Where do the scores come from?

Only from documents the manufacturer publishes (Safety Data Sheets, technical and environmental data sheets, Health Product Declarations) and from certifiers' own records. Every product page links to its sources.

Why does each base or sheen get its own score?

Ingredients and VOC levels change between sheens and tint bases, and each one has its own Safety Data Sheet. So we score at the barcode level, not the brand level.

Does any brand pay to be listed or rated?

No. Brands can't pay for a score or a placement. Makers can send newer documents to correct a listing.

Why don't some products have a score?

We only score a product when we have a current US Safety Data Sheet and a documented VOC figure. Without both, the product shows "Not enough data" instead of a guess.

Can I scan any can?

Sherwin-Williams and Valspar cans scan today. Benjamin Moore, Behr and KILZ don't publish barcodes, so search those by name. More brands are coming.
