What Is GREENGUARD Gold Certification for Paint?
· 1 min read
If you've researched paint for a nursery or bedroom, you may have seen the GREENGUARD Gold label. What does it actually tell you?
What the certification addresses
UL GREENGUARD Gold is a third-party certification program focused on chemical emissions from products. Its requirements are intended for environments that may include more sensitive occupants. The certification is about meeting specified emissions criteria—not proving that a product is risk-free.
Why emissions testing is different
A VOC-content number describes the composition of a coating under a defined measurement approach. Emissions testing evaluates what a product releases under standardized conditions. Both can be informative, but they answer different questions.
How to verify a claim
Look for the precise manufacturer, product name and applicable product family in the certifier's directory. Check whether the listed item matches the paint you intend to buy. Do not assume that every finish, variant or product from a certified brand is covered.
Does Gold mean best?
No single certification establishes that a paint is best for every home. It doesn't replace performance testing, installation instructions, ventilation, or consideration of other materials used in the room.
What if a paint isn't certified?
Absence of a certification is not proof of poor quality or unsafe emissions. A manufacturer may use another recognized testing pathway or may not have pursued certification. Look for comparable, verifiable documentation.
The smart way to use the label
Treat independent certification as a strong piece of evidence within a wider purchasing decision.
